Class? What class?

This Saturday, 29 May, class is canceled, due to family holiday plans.

I hope you all have a great week, and we’ll meet next Saturday, 5 June, at the new time – 6 p.m. eastern.

And Keep Writing!

Good Enough

Some time ago I was asked, “How do you know when something you’ve written is ‘good enough’?”

Without knowing where a writer is in his or her journey, that answer is almost impossible. However, here’s a quick breakdown:

1) New writers are likely going to need quite a bit of advice and polishing and even re-polishing of their work before it’s ready for publication. Period. (See my article “Write It Again, Sam” for nagging reiteration of this.)

2) More experienced writers might not need lots of “going over” but a crit group or friend or two to pick at their work is still a good idea.

3) When you feel it’s as best as you can get it (you’re down to twiddling over minutia, like which is the best adjective for a sentence – because perfectionists like me can always find some little thing to pick at), then submit it. If it’s accepted, fine. If not, look it over, with your crit group if you can, and try to find out what’s wrong. Could be lots. Or it could be fine, and the editor just didn’t like it.

4) What works for one writer might not work for another, so find what works for you.

5) Don’t sweat it.

6) Keep writing!

Class Topic

Saturday’s class is going to be on getting into a story without info-dump, tucking descriptions into your story, and who knows where we might rabbit-trail from there.

You can mosey to my forum and peruse the articles in the subject “Hooks” as a start:

See you Saturday, 4 eastern in the Cavern (MO:ULa)!

Class Update

This coming Saturday class is scheduled for 4 p.m. eastern US time in Mystonline:Urulive(again) (MO:ULa). Topic to be posted um, tomorrow. Right, yes, tomorrow I will post a topic.

Oh, BTW, MO:ULa is free, just download and start exploring. If you have questions, there’s a great resource at – FAQ, walk-throughs, and a forum if you really get stuck.

Also, here’s a video which shows you how to get your KI (a small device which allows you to communicate by text or voice chat, send IMs, etc.):
The KI is a must – please get it before you do any exploring!

My KI# is 418243. Class will be in UOT in MOUL’s bevin, which should be listed in the Nexus as I will be there at the time.

Due to the instability of online worlds, servers, companies, the universe, and everything, we are not mandating MO:ULa as the only resource for our class. We are exploring alternatives so we have back up worlds. Of course, this is assuming the universe itself does not implode. In that case, I think it would be safe to assume classes would be suspended indefinitely.

Welcome to Writer’s Cramps

I suppose it would be proper to have an introductory post. Consider this it.

If you want writing tips, you can get them here. Most will be short. I might include links to longer articles which are more in depth.

If you are interested in joining our Fiction Writing Class, we are meeting in a virtual world called Myst Online: Uru Live (again). It’s free, which is the good part, however, some of our students are having trouble getting it to run on their computers. We are, therefore, considering other options.

However, even if you can’t make it to classes for whatever reason, you can still keep up with the topics through this blog and through the forum on my website.

That’s it – welcome and keep writing!
